the wedding
i wouldn't normally write about something that happened over a month ago, but without an entry about the wedding you would really be missing out on a big part of my semester. now, i'm not going to write all of my thoughts about the wedding, because, well, it would take too long. but also because some of the memories i'm just going to keep for myself. selfish? maybe. but certain memories are meant to be kept for the heart, not the world. but what i do want to write about are more of the cultural things.this is the second non-american wedding i've been to, and i just think that a wedding is one of the most culture-pure (or maybe culturific would be a better word!) events that someone can attend/experience. (just as a side note, i also think one of the most culturific things you can do is play drinking games in a bar with random dutch people).
so, the wedding was between my great friend lindsay and her new hubby, andreas. he is from norway and she, from kansas city. they held a wedding in each of their respective home towns. and it just so happened that the norway wedding fell during my semester abroad. now, besides the fact that one of my very best friends got married to a wonderful man and i got to be there (and yes, i did cry an embarrassing amount), here are some of the cool things about the wedding:
- they served raindeer meat and cauliflower soup for the dinner! and some kind of berry (that grows wild) thing for dessert. and i loved all of it!
- the bride and groom don't kiss at the end of ceremony
- the women who attend the wedding all wear their traditional norwegian costume
- the dinner lasts for about 4 hours and then after dinner there were games and skits and stories and singing (and no dancing)
- there were lots of speeches including ones from the bride and groom
- at the end of the evening all of the family and friends line up along the path and the bride and groom walk down it while the guests sing a goodbye song to them. there were also candles lining the path where everyone was lined up.
- it was just wonderful!

the native dress is beautiful! the details of the pattern are really pretty. it looks like there may be lilacs there. sounds like some cool traditions. they look very happy together. wonderful couple.
